Oh, man…the question that has haunted me for the past three years. I can easily answer it for writing and social studies…but reading? Grapple. Grapple. Grapple. It’s why we often hand out worksheets or have the students climb on ReadWorks or NewsELA.

“What evidence do you have, beyond grades and test scores, to show growth in students’ reading?”
- Their choice of reading texts. Does it get more complex throughout the year?
- The volume of reading they do.
- Their ability to ask and then answer questions about their reading.
- Anecdotal records
- Response to Reading
But still…still, I find myself looking for something more concrete…something to validate what I notice about my learners.
In my next post, I will share what I currently use to give me a panoramic view of student growth.
Can’t wait to hear more about that. In our administrative walk throughs the principal or others often ask students what they are working on. Even that question gives me pause. Do they know?
